Assalaamu alaikum — welcome to Masjid Al-Aashiqeen, Florida.
MASJID AL-AASHIQEEN

Helping children feel at home in the masjid

Warm timber architecture and mihrab inside Cambridge Central Mosque

A child’s memories of the masjid are shaped by small things: a patient greeting, an adult who explains what is happening, and the feeling that worship is part of family life. Welcoming children and respecting worshippers can be approached together.

Prepare before the visit

Explain where you are going and what your child is likely to see. Practise simple expectations at home: shoes belong outside the carpeted prayer area, voices should be quiet when others are worshipping, and phones should not interrupt the gathering.

For a first visit, ask the masjid about suitable arrangements and a practical time to come. Do not assume that every programme or part of the building has the same facilities.

Keep expectations suited to the child

A younger child may need a shorter visit or a calm break with a parent. Plan for that possibility instead of treating it as a failure. Bring what is appropriate for your family while respecting the masjid’s rules and keeping the prayer space clean.

Guide with calm, specific instructions

“Please walk beside me” is easier to act on than a stream of warnings. If your child becomes unsettled, attend to them quietly and move to a suitable place if needed. A gentle explanation after the moment has passed is usually more constructive than a public reprimand.

Let the welcome belong to everyone

Other adults can help by greeting families kindly and directing concerns respectfully to a parent or responsible organiser. Parents can help by remaining attentive and considerate of those around them.

After the visit, ask what your child noticed or enjoyed. Answer questions honestly, and take questions you cannot answer to someone qualified to help.

Plan together: read our visitor guide, then contact the masjid to confirm the arrangements your family needs.
